About these formulas
Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were developed for clinical and research use. They estimate a reference weight for a given height and sex — often for people at least 5 feet (152 cm) tall.
- • BMI range uses 18.5–24.9 kg/m² applied to your height
- • Devine: 50 kg + 2.3 kg/in (men) or 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/in (women) above 5 ft
- • Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi use similar height-based adjustments
No single number fits everyone. Older adults, athletes, and people managing medical conditions may have different healthy weight goals.

Frequently asked questions
- What is ideal body weight?
- Ideal body weight formulas estimate a reference weight for a given height and sex. They are guides, not strict medical targets.
- Which ideal weight formula is best?
- Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi are all commonly used and may give slightly different results. The healthy BMI weight range for your height is often the most practical screening reference.
- Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
- Not always. Healthy weight depends on muscle mass, age, and overall health. Formula estimates and BMI ranges should be interpreted with clinical context.
