How TDEE is calculated
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) estimates how many calories you burn per day. We calculate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) with the Mifflin–St Jeor formula, then multiply by an activity factor.
- • BMR (men): 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
- • BMR (women): 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
- • TDEE = BMR × activity multiplier
A deficit of about 500 kcal/day is often associated with ~0.5 kg/week loss; a 250 kcal/day change is a gentler pace. These are estimates — metabolism, medical conditions, and training load all matter.

Frequently asked questions
- What is TDEE?
- Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimate of how many calories you burn in a day, including activity. It is often calculated from BMR multiplied by an activity factor.
- How is BMR calculated?
- This calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, which estimates resting energy needs from weight, height, age, and sex.
- How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
- A common starting point is about 250–500 kcal below your estimated maintenance (TDEE) per day, but safe targets depend on your health, activity, and medical history. Consult a professional for personalized advice.
